Julien Derivière, Printer

(French, 19th century)

[Allez Voir Le Grand Patineur/Rue Jean Goujon, No. 27], circa 1867-1872, unsigned, Julien Derivière, Paris, printer, color lithographic advertising poster on two sheets of paper, 42-1/8 x 29-1/2 in.; metal frame, conservation acrylic, 42-3/4 x 30-1/8 in.

This rare poster depicts W.H. Fuller, who had been awarded National Champion Skater by The Skating Club of New York in both 1865 and 1866. The assumption that the reader would know that [le grand patineur] was W.H. Fuller demonstrates the degree to which figure skating entered the popular culture of the nineteenth century. His name is not mentioned, only the phrase "go see the great skater."
