Julian Stanczak, a Polish immigrant to America, received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA from Yale University under the instruction of Josef Albers (1888-1976) and Conrad Relli (1913-2000). He painted highly technical paintings that were first exhibited at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York with the title “Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings”. In a review of the exhibition in Arts magazine, Donald Judd, used the term to describe the exhibition as “Op Art”. This term came to define the movement. He also exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art’s important exhibition, “The Responsive Eye.”

Painting with his left hand after injuries that left his dominant hand useless, he created compositions with layers of color and line with the precision and intensity of a scientist.

The lot is accompanied by a facsimile of the Restrospective catalog, "Julian Stanczak: OP=Visual Poetics" and an extensive biography.

Provenance:Commissioned and paid for by the Cleveland Institute of Art, then the 1975 Ohio Arts Council Award, "Eight" was gifted to Sherman Lee, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1975; Private Collection, Raleigh, North Carolina
