(French, 1836–1932)

[Palais de Glace/Champs-Elysées], 1896, signed in stone "J. Chéret", Chaix, Paris, printer, color lithographic poster, 45-3/4 x 33-5/8 in.; metal frame, 47 x 34-1/2 in.

The [Palais de Glace] was a man-made oval ice rink that opened in the [Théâtre du Rond-Point] in Paris in December 1893. Here, the thousands of French skaters who pursued the sport in [Belle-Époque] Paris could find ample space to ice dance in fashionable form. It was one of the best places to see and be seen, as demonstrated by this woman's striking red skating outfit and eye-catching pose.
